The Tunnel of Eupalinos

An engineering miracle beneath the earth

Just a few minutes from Pythagorion lies one of the most impressive achievements of antiquity: the Tunnel of Eupalinos. It was built in the 6th century BC by the engineer Eupalinos from Megara and has been designated an International Historic Landmark of Engineering by the American Society of Civil Engineers. At the same time, it is an integral part of the Pythagorion and Heraion of Samos UNESCO World Heritage Site
With a length of more than one kilometre, the Tunnel was the aqueduct that supplied water to the ancient city of Samos. A masterpiece of geometry, as it was opened simultaneously from two sides of the mountain reaching the centre with minimal deviation.
The tour in the Tunnel of Eupalinos starts from the entrance of the archaeological site, where information panels present the history and the way of construction of the project. Entering the gallery, you will follow in the footsteps of ancient workers through a cool, lighted corridor with visible signs of carvings on the walls.
There are three types of routes - short, medium and full - offering a different depth of experience, depending on the time and the willingness to explore. At the end of the route, the interior of the mountain reveals the perfection of Eupalinos' calculations, while special projections and sound effects come to life the moment the two groups of pioneering excavators met inside the rock, a shocking point of contact of human intelligence and audacity. During the visit, it is recommended to observe all safety rules indicated by the staff of the archaeological site.
Allow yourself to feel the awe of the place, hear the water flowing in the underground routes and imagine the ancient engineers who, with simple tools and infinite knowledge, achieved the impossible.
