Cheronia

The battlefield where Macedonian hegemony was born

In Cheronia, Boeotia, a simple stroll takes you on a journey into the past. Every step here narrates a piece of history. The archaeological walk will bring you face-to-face with the site of a legendary battle that redefined the ancient Greek world.
It is well worth starting or ending your tour with a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Cheronia. A short distance away, a path winds through an olive grove, leading you to the ancient theatre, carved directly into the rock during the late 5th century BC. The trail continues up Petrachos Hill and to the acropolis of ancient Cheronia. After a brief and gentle ascent, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the plains and surrounding mountains. At your feet lies the modern town, built on the same site as the ancient city —the birthplace of the great author Plutarch.
Of the many significant battles fought here, the most famous is that of 338 BC. It pitted the army of Macedonian King Philip against the allied southern Greek city-states, including Athens and Thebes, some of the most powerful city-states of ancient Greece.
The Macedonian army achieved a decisive victory, crushing the previously undefeated Sacred Band of Thebes. This triumph signalled the collapse of the city-state system and established the dominance of the Macedonian king. It also brought his son, Alexander the Great, to the forefront, clearing the path for his campaigns against the Persians and the dawn of the Hellenistic kingdoms.
The Macedonians who fell in battle were buried in a large tomb, while the men of the Sacred Band were laid to rest in a communal tomb (polyandrion) marked by a funerary monument: the Lion of Cheronia. You can see the restored Lion standing next to the Archaeological Museum of Cheronia, which houses weapons from both burial sites and a wealth of archaeological finds from across the Boeotia region.
Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks and let history be your guide.
