The Monuments of Delos

The Monuments of Delos

A multicultural metropolis of antiquity

Between Mykonos, Rineia, and Syros lies Delos, the sacred island of Apollo and Artemis. Included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1990, its archaeological site is one of the most fascinating open-air museums in the world.
The walk among the temples and residences takes approximately two to three hours. Make sure you hike up Mount Kynthos Hill (113m), as it offers a view breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. Starting from the Sanctuary of Apollo, you will come across the ruins of the Great Temple, the Temple of the Delians, and the Temple of the Athenians, which formed the religious centre of the island.
Slightly further north lies the Sacred Way with the Treasuries of the Cities, where the Greek city-states kept their precious offerings to the god. This is followed by the iconic Terrace of the Lions, featuring marble statues dedicated to Apollo.
It is worth touring the Foreign Quarters, where the luxurious residences of Greek, Italian, Egyptian, and Syrian merchants are preserved. The House of Dionysus stands out for its famous mosaic floor depicting the god riding a panther. The House of the Masks, with the dolphins, and the House of the Tritons, featuring a mosaic of a female Triton with Eros, reveal the refined aesthetics of the Delians.
At the northern end of the island is the Sanctuary of Foreign Deities, a testament to the multi-ethnic character of Delos during Hellenistic times. If you continue towards the western coast, you will reach the Stadium, the Gymnasium, and the Theatre
The Archaeological Museum of the island, founded in 1904, is one of the oldest in Greece, with finds dating from the archaic era to Roman times.
Currently, Delos is uninhabited and exudes an almost metaphysical atmosphere. A tour of the island feels like a journey to an era where light, commerce, and worship converged in the same place.
