The Ancient Face of Fourni Islands

A citadel of strategic importance

Fourni Islands have important points of cultural and historical interest that testify to the rich – and strategic – past of the place. The dominant one is the citadel of the Hellenistic period, which dominates the rocky hill of Agios Georgios, a short distance from the modern settlement. Climb up there and enjoy the panoramic view, reflecting that in ancient times this fortified position was a key one. In fact, it was part of a wider network that supervised the sea routes of the Eastern Aegean, with visual contact as far as Drakano on Ikaria Island.
In the modern settlement of Fourni you will come across important finds integrated into the fabric of the island, such as the Roman sarcophagus of the Alexandrian type located in the central square.
In Petrokopio, the impressive ancient quarry is preserved. There, craftsmen carved stone for building use, perhaps for export, too. Here you have the unique opportunity to swim in crystal clear waters next to the visible traces of ancient carving.
Hellenistic residential remains are also found in Chrysomilia, in the area of Agia Triada, where it is believed that the ruins of an ancient temple, possibly dedicated to Poseidon, were located.
From the traces of ancient tombs in Kamari to the fortified towers of Chrysomilia, Fourni invites you to follow in the footsteps of its ancient inhabitants. Explore this rich heritage and feel the tide of history with every step you take.
