Santirvan Mosque

A multi-dimensional historical ark

In the heart of Drama, you will come across the Santirvan Mosque (or Santirvan Temenos), one of the oldest Ottoman monuments in the region. Admire its minaret, which bears witness to the building's original construction as early as the 15th century. Explore the history of its renovation in 1806 and its subsequent multifaceted use, as for decades it housed the local newspaper "Tharros". The extensive restoration completed in 2018 now allows you to see the monument behind the structures that once concealed it.
Wander through the stone-built building with its rectangular plan and observe its detailed structure, which includes the main place of worship and the portico. One of its most striking features is the rich painted decoration of the main facade, a work carried out after 1829 and a unique example of art.
Inside, you will distinguish the mihrab niches, which indicated the direction towards Mecca to the faithful. Also, look for the visible traces of the minbar, the space from which the Imam delivered his religious sermon on Fridays, and the preserved balcony. Today, the Santirvan functions as a dynamic cultural venue.
The Santirvan Mosque combines historical memory with modern expression. Entry to the art space is free for the public, making it an accessible meeting point and place of knowledge. While wandering through the exhibitions that bridge the past with the present and are integrated into its ornate architecture, leave daily life behind for a moment of spiritual and aesthetic pleasure.
