Ancient Lato and Kritsa Gorge

Ancient Lato and Kritsa Gorge

From traces of antiquity to trails of nature

A short distance from Agios Nikolaos and Kritsa village, the ancient city of Lato and the gorge of Kritsa offer a unique experience, where history meets nature. This combination is an ideal day trip for those who love archaeology, hiking and the authentic atmosphere of the Cretan hinterland.
Lato was founded in the 7th century BC and flourished in the 4th-3rd century BC. It was one of the most important Doric cities of Crete. Built in a strategic location between two hills, it was dedicated to the goddess Leto and was home to Nearchus, Admiral of Alexander the Great. Today, the agora, the prytaneion, public buildings, sections of the theatre, and homes are preserved, bearing witness to how the ancient city was organised. The upper sections of the area offer enchanting views of Mirabello Bay.
A few kilometres away, Kritsa gorge leads to a landscape of wild beauty. The route is narrow, with impressive rocks up to 300 meters high. Hiking requires you are in good shape physically, but it rewards you with uniquely charming landscapes and contact with Cretan nature.
Your excursion can conclude with a stop for traditional dishes in Kritsa or in the neighbouring village of Kroustas, complementing your cultural tour with the tastes and hospitality of Crete.
