The Acropolis overlooking the Aegean Sea
If you are a lover of ancient civilization, a visit to the coastal settlement of Lindos is essential. It is one of the most important archaeological sites of the island, located on its southeastern side. From afar the towering rock stands out, crowned by the Acropolis that was the center of life of the settlement and experienced its heyday in the 7th-6th century BC.
To reach the Acropolis, you will walk along the cobbled path through the picturesque village. At its top, you will admire the Temple of Athena Lindia and other ruins of monuments dating from antiquity, the Byzantine era and the time of the Knights, such as a Hellenistic stoa, the church of Agios Ioannis (13th century) and the administrative building of the Knights. Slightly below, you will find the ancient stadium and a small open-air theater.
The view is magnificent, especially during the late afternoon hours, when the sun "dives" into the blue waters, painting the sky in the shades of orange and red. From here, you can gaze at the traditional settlement that is built amphitheatrically beneath the Acropolis, with its whitewashed houses and chapels.
Wander through the alleys, pause and admire the oldest houses of the village, dating back to the 17th century, photograph the captains' mansions and the Byzantine churches of the 11th century and visit the church of Panagia (1489-1490).
To complete your visit to Lindos, take a swim in the blue waters of its beaches, fully equipped for water sports, and taste fresh seafood in the tavernas.
