The Heraion of Samos

The monument that reveals the grandeur of ancient Samos

In the plain south of ancient Samos, where the land touches the Aegean Sea, stands the Heraion, the famous temple of the goddess Hera, a symbol of majesty and faith. Along with Pythagorion, the Heraion is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its unique contribution to the architecture, religion and history of Ionia. The imposing column that survives to this day rises as a silent witness of a civilization that laid the foundations of the western world.
Dedicated to the goddess of marriage and fertility, the sanctuary was one of the largest in antiquity. The Samian architects Rikos and Theodoros created a pioneering building for its time, which inspired classical architecture for centuries.
Walking through the archaeological site, among columns, bases and votive offerings, the visitor can feel the sanctity of the place, where worship coexisted with art and knowledge. The routes between the ruins lead to places with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, where celebrations were once held in honour of the goddess.
Do not miss the opportunity to visit the nearby Archaeological Museum of Heraion at Samos, where archaic sculptures, clay figurines, reliefs and inscriptions are exhibited, testifying to the timeless importance of the worship of Hera. Of particular interest is the representation of the temple and the votive offerings of the faithful, which offer a picture of the wealth and piety of the Samians through the centuries.
Every summer, the Heraia-Pythagoria Festival connects the myth with the present through music, performances and events that honour history and the goddess Hera.
Explore the Heraion, follow the footsteps of the ancient pilgrims and experience the magic of a place where tradition, faith and the light of the Aegean remain eternally alive.
