Archaeological Museum of Dion

A multi-level tour of the past

In the fertile region of Pieria, at a distance of approximately 500 m from the open-air archaeological site, lies the modern village of Dion. There you will encounter the Archaeological Museum of Dion and understand the splendour of the sacred ancient city through priceless artefacts brought to light by the archaeologist’s spade.
The museum is organised into thematic sections which correspond to the discovery sites of the finds – from public buildings and temples to the urban centre and cemeteries.
In the ground floor areas, the most significant statues that adorned the city dominate. You will admire representations such as Aphrodite Hypolympidia and the portraits of the imperial family, as well as a multitude of inscriptions, coins, and oil lamps that illuminate social life during the Roman period.
The first floor hosts sections regarding everyday and religious life, funerary finds, as well as samples from excavations in other areas of Pieria, such as ancient Pydna.
In the basement of the museum, one of the most significant technological exhibits of antiquity is kept: the Hydraulis. It is one of the oldest surviving keyboard musical instruments in the world, dating back to the 1st century BC and considered a precursor to the pipe organ. This find, retrieved from the city's baths, highlights the high level of expertise of the ancient Greeks. The same area also hosts large marble structures and architectural members.
In a special room, audio-visual material will give you a complete picture of both Dion and Mount Olympus. Overall, the Archaeological Museum of Dion acts as a bridge connecting the scattered ruins of the park with the vibrant life of the ancient city and is an integral part of the destination.
