Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete

A contemporary visual perspective

In the heart of the old town of Rethymno, below the Venetian wall, and very close to the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete invites you to experience the dynamism of contemporary Greek artistic creation.
The museum’s permanent collection originates from donations by collectors, artists, and friends of Rethymniot painter Lefteris Kanakakis. Its establishment began in 1992, with the foundation of the ‘Lefteris Kanakakis’ Municipal Gallery and was enriched along the way with pieces by Greek artists through the donation of Charalambos and Maria Maragou. The contribution of ‘Medusa’ art gallery was significant, while artists donated their works, further enhancing the wealth of the collection.
Today, the permanent collection numbers more than 700 works by contemporary Greek artists and it will take you on a journey through a wide range of post-war artistic creations, from the 1950s to the present. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, artistic workshops, participatory actions, and educational programmes, and is a point of reference in Cretan culture.
If you are an art lover, perhaps it is worth discovering other visual art stimuli the island has to offer, such as the Municipal Art Gallery of Heraklion, the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania, as well as the Karolos Kampelopoulos Museum (Monastery of Carlos).
