A Journey through Military History
In the heart of Athens, at the intersection of Vasilissis Sofias Street and Rizari Street, stands the War Museum, the largest military history institution in Greece. Surrounded by significant cultural institutions, such as the Benaki Museum and the National Gallery, it is an essential destination for those who wish to discover the military history of Greece.
Heirlooms and Collections
The core of the exhibits originates from the extensive Zappeion exhibition (1968) and the invaluable collection of Officer Petros Saroglou, which includes thousands of rare weapons from various historical periods. Over the years, the Museum has been enriched through the acquisition of archives and works of art, creating a comprehensive historical, photographic, and cinematic archive.
Touring the Exhibition Areas
The permanent exhibition is structured across 21 sections, covering history from the prehistoric era and antiquity to the Byzantine period and the Ottoman era. Particular emphasis is given to the Revolution of 1821, the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan Wars, and the Greco-Italian War of 1940-1941. The tour concludes with the Asia Minor Campaign, the National Resistance, Greece’s participation in the Korean War, and a special tribute to Cyprus. The gallery exhibiting historical costumes and flags is also impressive.
Architecture and Outdoor Exhibits
The building, designed by architect Thucydides Valentis in 1972, adheres to modern standards with clear influences from the Bauhaus school. In the outdoor areas, visitors can admire large-calibre guns, historical aircraft from the Air Force, and exhibits from the Navy that were used in legendary campaigns.
In addition to its permanent collections, the Museum hosts innovative educational programmes and temporary exhibitions, keeping alive the memory of the struggles of the Greeks for freedom.
