The "Archive of the Earth" in the natural context of Mt Olympus
Located in the heart of the mountainous landscape of Mt Olympus, in Litochoro village, Pieria, the Museum of Geological History of Mt Olympus offers a unique tour of the world of geology. In the exhibition you will find a comprehensive narrative of the geological course of the highest Greek mountain, from ancient morphogenesis to modern geological processes.
You will see characteristic minerals and rocks from different zones of Mount Olympus, as well as fossils of the wider area that reflect the evolution of the local flora and fauna through geological time. Particularly important is the section that explains the role of glaciers in the formation of today's peaks, ravines and highlands, but also the way in which erosion forms the impressive caves of the mountain massif.
At the same time, rare minerals are presented associated with the ancient Greek text "On Stones" or "Lithika", which is attributed to the Orphic tradition and connects Mt Olympus with myth and ancient knowledge. Livithra, the place where according to tradition Orpheus lived, is located near Leptokarya village and is another link between the geology and the cultural history of the area.
In addition, artistic works inspired by Olympus and Orpheus are exhibited in another hall, offering a creative, aesthetic dimension to the geological theme of the Museum.
Through touch screens, printed material and augmented reality, the museum invites you to discover the magic of geology. In order to embody the concept of experiential learning, it also offers educational programmes, workshops and guided tours, linking the visit inside the museum with hiking trails in the wider area of Mt Olympus.
