Capodistrias Museum

A Journey Through History and Nature

The Capodistrias Museum on Corfu is dedicated to the life and legacy of the first Governor of Greece, Count Ioannis Capodistrias. It is housed in "Koukouritsa", the former country house of the family, which is a declared historical monument of unparalleled architectural and natural beauty.
The Permanent Exhibition
The biographical exhibition spans four rooms of the old residence, presenting the different periods of the Governor's career. The visitor follows his journey from his native Corfu and the Septinsular Republic, to his emblematic diplomatic career in Europe as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Empire, and finally to Greece, where he served as the first Governor until his assassination in 1831. The collection includes personal items, family heirlooms, and government documents, offering a rare glimpse into 19th-century history.
The Garden and the Café
The lush botanical garden of the museum extends over 1.3 hectares and is a serene landscape with olive trees, laurels and myrtles. Visitors can explore the estate’s history via a digital outdoor path while enjoying views of the island’s interior and the Ionian Sea.
In the garden’s clearing, under the shade of centuries-old stone pines, is the Museum Café, an ideal rest area where cultural events are hosted during the summer months. The visit to Koukouritsa uniquely combines historical knowledge with contact with the Corfiot nature, honouring the memory of one of the most important personalities of modern Greece.
