A journey into the past of Eastern Crete
In the heart of Agios Nikolaos, the Archaeological Museum invites you on an exciting journey through time, from the Neolithic Period to Minoan Crete and later historical periods. It may be small, but it is extremely rich in exhibits, with antiquities covering all of eastern Crete, from Malia to distant Zakros.
Its collection consists of artefacts mainly originating in excavations in ancient settlements, tombs, sanctuaries, etc., which took place over the past 70 years. Its showcases display more than 1,500 vessels from the 3rd millennium BC, as well as gold and bronze finds – the most ancient in Crete.
The famous Goddess of Myrtos, a libation vessel in the form of a female figure from the Early Minoan settlement of Fournou Korifi near the village of Myrtos in Ierapetra stands out. Also of great interest are the finds from the Minoan palace of Malia and the grave goods from the cemetery of Agia Fotia, which is considered one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites in Greece.
