Museums on Santorini

A Journey Through History, from Prehistory to Seafaring

Santorini boasts world-class museums that serve as essential landmarks for every visitor. The cultural tour commences at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, one of the most important museums in Greece. The settlement of Akrotiri is highlighted using a modern approach, showcasing finds such as bronze vessels, tools, and Linear A tablets. At the same time, at the ‘Petros M. Nomikos’ Conference Centre, 3D reproductions of the frescoes offer a rare visual experience of the era's iconography.
Historical and Ethnographic Treasures
The Archaeological Museum chronicles human presence from the arrival of the Dorians to the Roman era, showcasing remarkable collections of sculptures, inscriptions, and clay figurines. In Kontochori, the Folklore Museum is housed in an underground structure dating back to 1861. Here, forgotten trades, such as blacksmithing and carpentry, are brought to life, while valuable manuscripts and lithographs are displayed, highlighting the island's folk culture.
Maritime Heritage and Wine
In Oia, the Maritime Museum is housed in a magnificent 19th-century captain’s house. The exhibition includes nautical equipment, ship models, and rare maps, illuminating Santorini’s contribution to maritime history. Finally, the unique underground Wine Museum, located eight metres below ground, presents the history of wine and the daily life of the winemakers. With an electronic guided tour system and tasting areas, it offers a comprehensive experience of Thera’s viticulture.
The museums of Santorini are not merely repositories of antiquities, but vibrant entities that connect the island’s volcanic destiny with the art, creativity, and survival of its people throughout the ages. A visit to these museums completes the picture of a destination that, beyond its natural beauty, possesses a profound and multifaceted cultural identity.
