Athens Olympic Museum

A Journey into the Olympic Ideal

The Athens Olympic Museum invites visitors to take a unique journey through the history of the Games, presented through a captivating chronological narrative. The exhibition highlights three key milestones in the history of the Olympic Games: their origins in Ancient Olympia, their revival in Athens in 1896, and their return to Greece during the 2004 event.
Values and Exhibits
The museum showcases the principles and values of the International Olympic Movement, the message of global peace, and humanity’s continuous striving for self-improvement. Embracing state-of-the-art educational techniques, it offers interactive hybrid and digital exhibits, as well as installations featuring original documents and artefacts from antiquity to the present day. In order to document the collection, the curatorial team collaborated with over 40 international cultural organisations. The contributions of Greek Olympians and Paralympians are significant, as they donated medals and personal equipment, conveying the authentic spirit of competition.
International Standards and Accessibility
The museum was designed according to international standards and is fully accessible to all. It is located on the 1st floor of the Golden Hall mall and is connected via pedestrian bridge to the ‘Spyros Louis’ Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens (O.A.K.A.). It is a member of the International Olympic Museums Network and operates under the auspices of the Greek and International Olympic Committees.
Olympic Legacy
It was established to house the country’s Olympic legacy and to showcase Athens as an Olympic capital. At the end of their tour, visitors can stop by the authorised shop to purchase official products and souvenir gifts from the Museum’s extensive collection. A visit here is not merely a historical journey, but an immersive experience that allows the visitor to feel the pulse of the Games and the enduring values of Olympism.
‘1896’ café-restaurant
A new meeting place can be found at the Museum: the café-restaurant ‘1896’, with a Greek and Mediterranean identity, where you can enjoy a coffee or meal with a view of the ‘Spyros Louis’ Olympic Athletic Centre of Athens (O.A.K.A.).
