Anthochori Metsovo Water-Powered Museum ‘Mandani’

The power of water and the wisdom of tradition

The Water-Powered Museum of Metsovo known as ‘Mandani’, is one of the most important of its kind in Greece and showcases in an impressive way the traditional use of water as a source of energy. In picturesque Anthochori, at an altitude of 1,040 m., you will discover a place where history, nature and tradition come together to create an exceptional visitor experience.
At the museum, you will see restored traditional water-powered facilities such as watermills and fulling tubs. These mechanisms bring to life the way in which local residents used to grind their cereals and wash their thick woollen blankets. The power of water is presented as an element that shaped the daily life of mountain communities, highlighting a culture closely bound to the natural environment.
Along the cobbled paths of the museum you will wander among running water, stone bridges and carefully maintained structures. Each point in the grounds offers an opportunity to discover the charm of traditional Epirote architecture. At the end of the route, the café overlooking the surrounding mountains will offer you an ideal place to relax in an idyllic, lush green setting.
The location of the museum is also an excellent starting point for exploring the surrounding area. Mount Lakmos, with its impressive natural trails, as well as the enchanting Verliga Dragon Lake, offer ideal opportunities for hiking and for experiencing the alpine landscape of the Pindus. During outdoor activities, you must observe all necessary safety measures and, where required, seek the company of an experienced, certified guide.
Discover a place where water sets history in motion and enjoy an unforgettable experience in the heart of the Pindus.
