Natural History Museum of Crete

A panorama of the charm and power of nature

On the coastal avenue of Heraklion, the Natural History Museum of Crete invites you on an exciting journey to the natural world of the island and the Eastern Mediterranean. In a modern, interactive space you will get to know the ecosystems of Crete, its animals and plants, as well as the forces that have shaped the island from prehistory to the present day. The Museum combines knowledge with experiential learning, while it is an important centre of research and environmental education.
In its halls you will tour realistic dioramas that represent the landscapes of Crete, from the peaks of Psiloritis and the gorges of the White Mountains to the protected beaches of the island. At the seismic table, visitors safely experience the sensation of a real earthquake. What is also of particular interest is the section with the fossils and the dwarf hippopotamus of Crete, a species that lived on the island about 10,000 years ago. There are also a digital projection room and special programmes for children.
It is worth combining your visit with an excursion to the Aquarium of Crete, located in Gournes, Heraklion. There, more than 2,500 marine species of the Mediterranean are presented in impressive aquariums, offering a complete experience of getting to know marine life.
Dive into the enchanting world of the natural history of Crete and let the experience fascinate you.
