A unique hub of history and everyday stories
The Volos Museum of the City is an excellent opportunity to travel through time and come to know the soul of the city. Since 2014 it has been housed in the former Papadou industrial tobacco warehouse, an impressive building dating back to the early 20th century, standing in the Palia quarter of Volos, which has been transformed into a modern and interactive exhibition space.
The permanent exhibition, entitled “Volos, 10+ stories”, offers a wonderful tour of the city’s growth from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century. Its thematic units highlight urban planning, infrastructure, demographics, culture, sports, tourism and employment. Black and white photographs, an old school uniform, objects of an everyday life that seems both familiar and distant, act as windows to the historical world of a city with a unique character.
The Volos Museum of the City does not only present exhibitions, but also living narratives through the active participation of the public – including, among other things, historical walks based on personal testimonies, audio tours, educational programmes, lectures and cultural workshops. On the ground level, in addition to the temporary exhibition and event spaces, there is a shop and a reading room.
Beneath the temporary exhibition hall, sections of water and sewerage pipelines dating from the middle Byzantine period (6th-7th century AD) survive and are visible to the general public.
The interactive approach combined with the innovative architecture of the building and the live stream of stories make the Volos Museum of the City an ideal destination for those who desire an in-depth understanding of this wonderful city. Visit the Museum – because here, the city tells its own story.
