The history of the city through art
In the heart of Piraeus, at the corner of Filonos Street, the old post office of 1899 was reborn to house the Municipal Gallery, a space that captures the city’s gaze through the art and works of its people. Since 1957 it has been collecting paintings, engravings and sculptures that encapsulate the pulse of the port and the everyday life of its people.
As you tour the halls, you will see about 200 works by important Greek artists, such as Georgios Kastriotis and Stamatis Lazarou, while the space also hosts temporary exhibitions that illuminate the contemporary art scene.
Top exhibits include the oil painting titled ‘Sun bathing’ by Nikolaos Lytras, the work "In the building trade" by Pericles Vizantios, as well as a number of works by Michail Axelos on the subject of the port of Piraeus.
The Municipal Gallery of Piraeus is more than a museum. It is a place of dialogue, a place to meet, with educational programmes, guided tours, and events for young and old alike, that will bring you closer to the cultural identity of Piraeus.
When you step outside, your walk continues. The surrounding neoclassical buildings, the small cafés, and the lively bustle of Filonos Street complete the feeling that art is everywhere, even in the simplest moments of the city.
