A Museum of Living Musical Tradition in Krousonas
In the historic village of Krousonas, just 17 kilometers from the city of Heraklion, lies a space dedicated to the soul of Greek tradition: the “THIRATHEN” Museum. Its name, which in antiquity referred to knowledge that comes “from outside” (secular education), reflects the philosophy of a museum that opens its doors to the research, documentation, and dissemination of musical heritage.
A Journey into the Charm of Sound
Housed in a beautifully restored traditional home, the museum offers visitors a journey through the timeless melodies of the Mediterranean. Its aim is to introduce the public to Greek traditional music in its entirety, while also familiarizing them with the instruments of neighboring countries, highlighting the shared musical paths of different cultures.
Classification of Instruments
The musical instruments in the collection are classified according to the international system of E. von Hornbostel and C. Sachs. Based on the vibrating element that produces sound, the exhibits are divided into:
- Aerophones: Instruments that use air (such as flutes).
- Chordophones: Instruments with strings (such as the lyre and lute).
- Membranophones: Instruments with stretched membranes (such as drums).
- Idiophones: Instruments that produce sound from their own material body (such as bells).
Education and Cultural Activities
“THIRATHEN” functions as a living cultural organism, open to collaborations with educational institutions. It implements specialized school programs that include interactive tours, music-and-movement activities, and digital presentations. The goal is to connect younger generations with rhythm and the craftsmanship of instrument-making, ensuring that traditional music continues to enrich our cultural present.
