In the Footsteps of Fearless Laskarina
Housed in a late 17th-century mansion, the Bouboulina Museum is one of the island’s most important historical landmarks. It is located in the former residence of Laskarina Bouboulina, the legendary sea captain who devoted both her heart and her fortune to the Greek War of Independence.
Stepping inside, you will explore the impressive interiors of the mansion and discover personal belongings, weapons, documents, letters, family heirlooms, and furniture that vividly portray the life of a woman who outfitted ships, organised a fleet, and took an active role in naval warfare.
A highlight of the visit is the grand hall, featuring an intricately carved wooden ceiling in Florentine style—an architectural gem that reflects the wealth and prosperity of Spetses in the pre-revolutionary era. During the guided tour, you will hear stories about Bouboulina’s ship the Agamemnon, her naval operations during the Greek Revolution, and the crucial role played by the people of Spetses in the struggle for independence.
Just a short walk away, in Dapia Square, in front of the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, stands her bronze statue, created by the sculptor Natalia Mela. There, you will truly appreciate how deeply the figure of this Spetses heroine is intertwined with the island’s identity.
