Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The Brilliant Panorama of Minoan Civilization

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum, in the heart of Crete, is the world’s foremost museum of Minoan civilization. Across its 27 galleries unfolds a story spanning 5,500 years—from the Neolithic era to Roman times—through invaluable treasures unearthed from palaces, villas, funerary monuments, and sacred caves across the island.

Highlights of the Collection

As visitors move through the museum, they witness the evolution of pottery, from the simplicity of the Neolithic period to the rich diversity of Minoan craftsmanship. Among the most outstanding exhibits are the colorful Kamares ware vessels, the sacred double axes, and the bull’s-head rhyton. Dominating the collection is the Phaistos Disc—one of archaeology’s greatest enigmas—with its engraved hieroglyphic script and ideograms that remain undeciphered.

Religious and social life comes vividly to life through iconic works such as the imposing Snake Goddesses in traditional Minoan attire, the ivory figurine group of the Bull-Leaper, and the “Zatrikion,” a luxurious board game resembling chess. On the upper floor, world-famous frescoes—including the “Parisienne,” the “Prince of the Lilies,” and the Dolphins—reveal the refined aesthetics of Minoan palaces. Masterpieces of craftsmanship, such as the gold Bee Pendant from Malia and the “Ring of Minos,” inspire awe with their intricate detail.

From Prehistory to the Classical Era

The journey continues into the Sub-Minoan and Geometric periods, concluding in the grand sculpture hall with larger-than-life statues of gods and mortals. Equally impressive is the Hymn of the Kouretes, once chanted by young men in honor of Zeus of Mount Dikte. Everyday items—such as ivory combs and grooming tweezers—highlight the striking similarities between Minoan society and the modern world.

Visitor Tip: For a complete experience, combine your visit to the museum with a trip to the archaeological site of Knossos, the legendary palace of King Minos, located just 5 km southeast of Heraklion.
