Archaeological Museum of Kastoria

Treasures from Ancient Orestis

In Argos Orestiko, a city that was particularly strengthened following the construction of the Egnatia Highway and the connection with Northern Greece, there is the Archaeological Museum of Kastoria. It is a modern cultural centre that clearly captures the archaeological phases of the region from the Neolithic to the Roman era.
The exhibition area is specially designed to highlight the finds from excavations in the prefecture of Kastoria and the surrounding mountains. You will have the opportunity to admire tombstones, ceramic vases, metal objects and mosaics that shed light on the daily life, economic activities and cultural contacts of the area.
The permanent exhibition is structured in a way that enhances the understanding of local history and is divided into four sections:

  • Early Iron Age.

  • The kingdom of Orestis, from the middle of the 6th to the 4th century BC.

  • Orestis in the kingdom of Macedon, 4th-3rd century BC.

  • Orestis, as a free town, in the Roman state, with finds from the 3rd-1st century BC.

Near the museum lies the archaeological site of Diocletianoupolis, a fortified Roman city that flourished especially during the early Byzantine period. The city was abandoned in the 6th century AD, when, according to sources, Emperor Justinian moved the population to a safer location, in today's Kastoria. Diocletianoupolis now serves as a prelude to the visit to the Byzantine Museum of Kastoria.
Plan to spend a day in the wider area, enjoying a walk in the stone alleys of Argos Orestiko, a stop for coffee in the square or an excursion to the surrounding forests.
