A window into Macedonia's prehistoric past
In Siatista, Kozani, a city known for its mansions and rich cultural tradition, is located the Paleontological Museum of Siatista, with one of the most important paleontological collections in Greece. Its exhibition areas present finds that reveal the natural history of Western Macedonia from the era of large mammals to the geological layers that testify to thousands of years of changes in the landscape.
The fossilized bones of proboscis animals, equines and bovids, which were discovered in the surrounding areas, are important testimonies to the fauna that once dominated.
The prehistoric elephant of Kaloneri is also hosted here. Part of the skull and its tusks are intact, which is extremely rare for findings of this age. Dating puts it about 125,000 years ago, at a time with rich fauna and particular environmental features. This impressive exhibit has been placed in a way that allows careful observation, offering a direct link to the prehistoric life that existed in the land of Siatista.
