Samos Tanning Museum

A Journey into Industrial History

In Karlovassi, Samos, a town with a deep industrial tradition, stands the Tanning Museum, the only one of its kind in Greece. Housed in an imposing, old stone "tampakiko" (tannery), the museum is a living witness of the era when Samos dominated the processing and trade of sole leather throughout the Mediterranean.
The Golden Age of Samian Tanning
The history of tanning on the island began with small family workshops at the port of Vathy, but the activity really flourished in Karlovasi during the last quarter of the 19th century. Thanks to the island’s strategic location and the commercial privileges granted under the Principality of Samos—such as the absence of customs duties—Samian leather was exported to markets across Europe, the Balkans, and Asia Minor.
This prosperity continued until 1930, turning Karlovasi into a robust economic and urban centre, before industrial decline and competition led to the definitive decline of the sector at the end of the 20th century.
Exploring the Art of Leather
Today, while the stone "shells" of the old factories still stand on the coastline creating an atmospheric industrial backdrop, the Tannery Museum undertakes to bring this glorious chapter of history to life. During your tour, you will discover traditional tools, heavy machinery and specialised methods of leather processing, from the initial soaking of hides to their final polishing.
Living Memory and Cultural Identity
The rich photographic material, the authentic documents and the detailed map of the tanneries, that operated on the island, vividly recreate the daily lives of workers and merchants of another era. A visit to the museum offers not only knowledge of a traditional craft, but also a deep understanding of the cultural identity of Samos, which was forged through the toil and creativity of its people.
