Thanks to the island’s strategic location and the commercial privileges granted under the Principality of Samos—such as the absence of customs duties—Samian leather was exported to markets across Europe, the Balkans, and Asia Minor.
This prosperity continued until 1930, turning Karlovasi into a robust economic and urban centre, before industrial decline and competition led to the definitive decline of the sector at the end of the 20th century.
