A new gateway in the history of Macedonia
At the entry point to the mythical Mount Olympus, in Litochoro, Pieria, one of the most modern museum projects in Northern Greece has been established: the Digital Historical Museum of the Revolution of Mt Olympus. It is housed in the restored Gudelia mansion and is a new cultural landmark for Pieria. Its mission is to illuminate the lesser known but extremely important revolutionary action of the region, focusing on the events of 1878, when the Mt Olympus fighters revolted claiming union with Greece.
The museum presents the historical archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in digital form, covering the period from the pre-revolutionary years to the beginning of the 20th century. With modern technologies such as touch screens, interactive applications, 3D animation, documentary projections, as well as virtual and augmented reality experiences, you will have the opportunity to experience the critical aspects of local history.
The thematic sections include the Revolution of Mt Olympus in 1878, the torpedoing of the Turkish battleship "Fetih Bülend" in 1912, but also rare photographic material by Frederic Boissonas from the first ascent of Mytikas peak in 1913. Part of the painting collection of Philopoemen Constantinidis is also hosted in its premises.
The museum also highlights the key role of Litochoro village, which was one of the main nuclei of the revolutionary struggle. Data on the chieftains, the battles, the losses and the consequences of the uprising are presented, while the narrative is linked to the wider history of the Macedonian Question. The digital approach offers an immersive experience that brings history to life through state-of-the-art technologies.
