Archaeological Museum of Thasos

Exhibits that illuminate thousands of years of life on the island

The Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses a remarkable cultural treasure of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Built in 1935, next to the Ancient Agora, it has been renovated and expanded to accommodate unique finds spanning thousands of years of history, from prehistoric times to early Christian times.
Walk among busts of gods and heroes, marble statue heads, amphorae, jewellery and inscriptions. Every object unfolds before your eyes aspects of Thassian life, religion and art.  The texts on the legislation of wine are of particular importance. They date back to around 450 BC. They are considered to be among the oldest surviving in the world on this issue and highlight how closely the island was connected with wine.
The rich collection of archaic pottery also stands out, coming from the Cycladic and northeastern workshops, but also from the Thassian potters themselves, who assimilated the influences of the Aegean and the East in a creative way. Equally impressive is the collection of marble sculptures, free-standing and reliefs, from the famous Thassian marble – one of the richest you can find in a provincial museum.
Your gaze will be magnetised by Krioforos Kouros, a statue about 3.5 metres high that dominates the central hall. Created in the 6th century BC, it depicts a young man holding a ram and is a rare example of archaic sculpture. The power of the statue is indicative of the grandeur of ancient art.
Every room, every inscription, every object in the Archaeological Museum of Thasos is like whispering centuries-old stories. Discover them with a tour that will take you from the first settlements to the heyday of the classical period and the evolution of Thasos through the centuries.
