Walking around Santorini's volcano

Walking around Santorini's volcano

A Geological Marvel in the Aegean

Santorini is one of the most celebrated destinations worldwide, an island that, despite the dizzying tourist development of recent decades, manages to remain alluring, brimming with secrets and undiscovered beauty. At the heart of the Santorinian landscape lies the imposing volcanic Caldera, the vast underwater crater formed after the cataclysmic eruption of the 16th century BC, when three-quarters of the island sank to the depths of the sea.

Take a Boat Trip to the Heart of the Crater

A tour of the Caldera and the small volcanic islets that surround it is a truly unique and unforgettable experience. The adventure begins with boarding one of the traditional boats or sailboats that circumnavigate the bay, offering you the opportunity to explore this remarkable geological phenomenon up close.

Nea Kameni: Ascending the Lunar Landscape

Your first stop is Nea Kameni. Don your rubber shoes, apply ample sunscreen, and grab a bottle of water as you embark on the ascent to conquer the crater's peak. The route takes approximately 30 minutes, unfolding through an ethereal, lunar landscape brimming with dark-hued rocks, where the scent of sulphur serves as a reminder that the volcano remains active.

Palia Kameni: Therapeutic Dips in the Thermal Waters

Next, the journey continues to Palia Kameni, where you can enjoy a unique dip in the therapeutic waters of the Thermal Springs. The waters here have a distinctive reddish hue due to the sulphur content and their temperature is noticeably higher than the rest of the sea.

Thirasia: An Authentic Glimpse into the Past

The exploration concludes in Thirasia, the largest of the Caldera's islets, standing opposite Oia like a land untouched by time. From Riva, the picturesque little port, ascend to Manolas, the capital with its unparalleled views of Santorini. Be sure to visit the village of Potamos, hidden away in a ravine, with its beautiful cave houses that showcase the island's authentic architecture.
