Routes with magnificent views
Whether you are a nature lover, a walker or simply wish to explore every corner of Hydra, the island offers this opportunity through a unique network of hiking routes that extends across its entire expanse.
Getting to know Hydra’s geomorphology and unique beauty is possible through five main routes, covering every side of the island. The route on the eastern side, leading to the Zourvas lighthouse, passes through a rocky landscape, while the western side towards Bisti is pine-clad. At the centre of the island rises Mount Eros, which gradually descends as it stretches towards the southern side and the sea.
Whichever route you choose, wherever you may find yourself, the view is enchanting. Along the way, you will discover the island’s rich flora, including wildflowers (such as cyclamens and poppies), pine trees, thyme, shrubs and olive trees. As for fauna, you will see donkeys and mules, cats, wild goats, many species of birds that either live permanently on Hydra or stop there during migration, as well as small mammals, amphibians and reptiles.
Hiking is favoured throughout the year thanks to Hydra’s mild climate. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, while in summer it is advisable to avoid the midday hours because of the heat.
The signs along the routes provide directions for the course of the hike and indicate nearby points of interest. It is essential to observe all safety measures and, in some cases, to seek the company of an experienced, certified guide.
