Hiking Trails in Vardousia Mountains

Hiking Trails in Vardousia Mountains

Trails across one of the most imposing mountains in the country

Wild peaks, imposing slopes, alpine plateaus and fir forests. Vardousia is the largest mountain massif in Central Greece and one of the most striking in the country, with the highest peak Korakas at 2,495 m.
Vardousia is renowned among mountaineers and climbers for its steep slopes, which present a challenge in every season. It is no coincidence that the mountain hosts two alpine refuges—one operated by the Greek Mountaineering Club of Amfissa and another by the Athens Hiking Club. The area is equally celebrated for its rich biodiversity, including numerous rare plant species, five of which are endemic and found nowhere else.
Easier trails are available at lower altitudes. The village of Athanasios Diakos makes an ideal base, offering hotels and restaurants. Particularly scenic and easy is the trail that leads to Kato Mousounitsa, in about one hour. From there, you can continue to Sykia on Mount Giona, walking along the riverbed of the Mornos on a four-hour route (it is part of the long-distance Pindus Trail).
Easy and convenient, as it is circular, is the route to the small chapel of Prophet Elias (3-4 hours).
If you are prepared for a steeper ascent, it's worth trying the trail that leads to the two refuges to have close-up views of Vardousia’s dramatic peaks and alpine scenery. It is part of the E4 trail and will take about 4 hours. The panoramic spectacle of the peaks more than compensates for the effort. From the refuges, the summit of Korakas lies roughly two hours away, though the ascent requires experience. A more accessible ascent is the route from the village of Dafni to the summit of Sinani, which takes about 2–2.5 hours. In all cases, it is advisable to hike with an experienced guide. Alternatively, always check weather conditions in advance and consult locals regarding trail accessibility before setting out.
