Deskati Mountain Shelter

A hub for mountain activities

In the heart of the Kamvounia Mountains, in one of the quietest and most unspoiled corners of Western Macedonia, lies the Deskati Mountain Shelter. Built at an altitude of about 1,415 metres in the area of Vounasa, the shelter serves as a basic rest and preparation point for those who wish to explore the paths and ridges that stretch between Grevena, Kozani and Pieria.
The area is of strategic importance for hikers, as it is a passage of the E4 international trail, one of the most important hiking networks in Europe. This is where signposted routes start or pass. Indicatively, you can look for a 7 km long route to the chapel of Agios Georgios (about 2 hours), another route to the Monastery of Agia Evangelistria (2.5 hours) and another to Elati (10 km). The location offers panoramic views of Prionos peak (1,616 m).
The crossing of Vounasa is famous for the dense beech and fir forest, the impressive view of Lake Polyfytos and the plain of Grevena, as well as for the rich bird fauna it hosts. The mountainous landscape below Prionos peak offers activities for the whole family. There is a small ski resort in the area, while the rocky slopes are an attraction for climbers of all levels. Vounasa stands out for its rich flora. There you could search for local "mountain tea".
The Deskati Mountain Shelter, although austere, is fully functional. With a capacity of approximately 50–70 people, it provides dormitories, an organised kitchen, two living rooms with fireplace and toilets (indoor and outdoor). It is often used by mountaineering clubs and naturalist groups, while it remains accessible much of the year, depending on the weather conditions.
A visit to the shelter is an ideal starting point if you seek a calm, authentic mountain experience, in an environment that combines wildlife, local character and routes of all levels of difficulty.
