A world-class climbing destination
In recent years, the cliffs of the Manikia area have come alive with colour. Groups of young climbers from all over the world bring energy to Kymi and its surrounding villages, filling them with their joyful voices, vibrant gear, and their passion for nature. The profile of the region is evolving thanks to climbing, as it continues to grow rapidly in popularity.
The area’s potential was first recognised by locals, who had already developed around 60 routes. However, Kymi’s big breakthrough came in 2015, when French climbing instructor Simon Montmory saw the remarkable future, these rocks could offer. In the years that followed, with financial support from the Municipality of Kymi–Aliveri and the voluntary efforts of Greek and international climbers, an ambitious plan began to take shape.
At the same time, the Manikia Project was established—essentially a community-driven initiative made up of local residents and climbers. It is dedicated to promoting climbing as well as other outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, trail running, and hiking, while also publishing a climbing guidebook whose proceeds are reinvested in the development and maintenance of routes.
This growing momentum caught the attention of a major climbing equipment company, which in 2022 funded the development of new routes, provided gear, and organised a festival that brought together some of the world’s top climbers—helping to shine an international spotlight on the area.
Today, Kymi offers around 800 climbing routes of all difficulty levels. If you’re an experienced climber, you’ll find a true paradise here. Beyond climbing and outdoor activities, the area also boasts stunning beaches, excellent cuisine, and opportunities to visit nearby sights and villages. If you’re new to the sport, you can turn to a certified mountain guide or a climbing school affiliated with the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing to get introduced to this exciting activity.
