In the Crystal Waters of Epirus
The Voidomatis River, a tributary of the Aoos River, is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Its name comes from the Slavic "Bode-Matt", meaning "good water", and it truly lives up to its reputation. It flows for 15 km through landscapes of unique natural beauty within the National Park of Vikos-Aoos, surrounded by ancient plane trees and traditional stone bridges.
The Route: Rafting and Kayaking
Rafting on the Voidomatis River is an experience ideal even for beginners. The starting point is the bridge of Aristi, in the heart of Zagori. The 5 km route is crowned by trees bowing to the water, while gentle rapids allow the visitor to enjoy the lush setting with natural springs and small waterfalls.
Halfway through the trip, rafters encounter the abandoned monastery of Agii Anargyri (16th century). The towering cliffs and the caves used by hermits framing the monastery are breathtaking. The body and soul are rejuvenated before rafters pass under the impressive single-arched bridge of Klidonia, the architectural "jewel" of the river.
The Thrill of the Descent
The final stretch includes careful navigation of a small artificial waterfall, under the guidance of experienced instructors. For the adventurous, a plunge in the icy, crystal-clear waters is the perfect finale. Reaching the endpoint, the beauty of the surroundings makes you want to start the journey all over again.
Access and Accommodation
Visitors can use Ioannina, Konitsa, or the picturesque stone villages of Zagori as a base. The traditional guesthouses and mansions of the area offer authentic hospitality. The Zagori Excellence Network (ZEN) serves as an invaluable resource for planning your trip, revealing all the hidden gems of this unique region.
