From the pines to the waves
Kassandra, the first "leg" of Chalkidiki, is world-famous for its cosmopolitan beaches. It hides however, a green heart that invites you on exciting hiking routes. The experience is unique, as the trails run through endless pine forests that reach the coastline, offering magnificent panoramic views of the sea.
The recognised network of trails on the peninsula covers different levels of difficulty, ensuring a route for every hiker.
One of the most famous and long routes starts from Sani and ends at Siviri, a trek of about 20 km through dense forests. Around the starting point, you can take a short loop around the Stavronikita Tower and explore the wetlands of Nea Fokaia, an important bird sanctuary.
If you are looking for an easier but equally scenic path, the route starting from Poseidi beach and heading towards Kalandra via the forest road is ideal for a relaxed morning walk.
Also, the Loop of Lake Mavrobara, near Polychrono, is a short trail suitable for families. The lake is a wetland known for the two rare species of water turtle it hosts, offering gentle contact with a unique ecosystem.
If you prefer the hinterland, the circular route from Kryopigi towards mountainous Kassandrino mainly uses forest roads, passing through the most isolated and wooded parts of the peninsula.
The ascent from Chanioti towards the Fire Lookout will lead you to an altitude of 300 m, where you will be rewarded with unobstructed views of Nea Skioni and the Aegean.
Kassandra proves that it is much more than a summer destination. It is a lush green field of exploration, where every step brings the land and sea closer together.
