Canoe kayak in the Pinios River

Canoe kayak in the Pinios River

A Journey from the River to the Sea

The Pineios River, the mythical abode of the Nymphs, is an ideal destination for canoeing and kayaking all year round. With calm waters and a low level of difficulty, the descent is ideal for beginners and families, offering a unique connection with the rich flora and fauna of the Thessalian plain. In your canoe, you will discover an earthly paradise with herons, cormorants, and flamingos, while willows and plane trees gently caress the water as you pass.
Suggested Routes

  •        Paleopyrgos Bridge - Aegean Sea (1.5 - 2 hours): A serene journey in harmony with nature, starting at Palaeopyrgos and ending at the turquoise waters of the Aegean. At sandy Strintzos beach, you can have a picnic or combine paddling and archery.

  •        Omolio Bridge - Aegean Sea (3-4 hours): A route demanding greater stamina due to its duration. It starts at the historic Omolio Bridge and crosses the imposing Megas Lakos gorge, believed to have been crossed by Alexander the Great, offering vistas of untamed beauty before emerging onto the open sea.

Useful Information
The best period for canoeing starts in October and extends through spring, as the water level recedes considerably during the summer months. You will also need a second pair of shoes, swimwear, a towel, and sunscreen. Besides canoeing, you can go rafting at Vernezi, monorafting, and birdwatching in the protected Delta.
Attractions and Mythology
Be sure to visit the Tempi Valley with the springs of Aphrodite, the Dryas Environmental Centre, and the archaeological site of Homolion. According to the myth, the Pineios River was created from the tears of the deities of the Pindus and Lingos mountains, whom the gods separated out of jealousy. Today, the river continues to flow between them, reminding us of their lost love and offering travellers an experience that combines action with serenity.
