Trekking in Valia Calda

The Trails of the "Warm Valley"

Valia Calda in the prefecture of Grevena, the "warm valley" in the Vlach dialect, is one of the last virgin paradises of Greece. With forested slopes and inaccessible peaks, the National Park offers the ultimate trekking experience - the only way to explore its grandeur.
The Route to Adventure
The adventure begins with a 4x4 vehicle from the village of Ziaka. The road descends past the Exarchos fountain, revealing the imposing Avgo peak. We continue towards the picturesque village of Perivoli and turn left for the park. At 1,500 metres, a must-stop is at "Stavros" viewpoint, where the panoramic view of the valley with the river crossing it is stunning.
The International Trail and Flegas Lakes
This is where the hike starts. We follow the path to the E6 international path. After a short walk of ten minutes from the wooden bridge, we turn left leaving E6 to ascend to the lakes of Flegas. The path is well maintained up to the forest boundary at 2,000 metres. There, the landscape changes and the two small, serene lakes are revealed on our left in a lush area.
The summit and Return
Ascending further, we conquer the summit, where the view of the artificial lake of Aoos unfolds in all its glory. For a safe return to the base, the route along the ridge is recommended, as the descent directly from the lakes is inaccessible and requires climbing equipment.
A Living Ecosystem
Valia Calda is a refuge for the bear, the wolf, the fox and many raptors. In Arkoudorema, the heart of the park, it is not uncommon to find traces of animals looking for water there.
