Discover the island on foot
Symi is best discovered by walking its hiking trails. The longest route, covering 22km, is ideal for nature lovers; it starts at Gialos and ends at Panormitis via a verdant path where you will encounter various churches and monasteries. Consider a detour through the forest near the Kourkouniotis area, and perhaps pause for a refreshing dip at Marathounda beach before reaching Panormitis, as you descend towards the bay and the monastery of Taxiarchis Michail (Archangel Michael).
The meandering pathways through the Hora's alleys burst with colour. Begin at Gialos, ascending the 500 wide stone steps of Kali Strata, and admire the vibrant houses and quaint shops lining its length. The route ends at Syllogou Square in Ano Symi (Chorio), where you will see the old pharmacy, known as "Spetsaria".
Continuing your exploration, you arrive at Avgerinou Square. It is worth wandering among the abandoned houses with their old furniture and painted ceilings, and visiting the Archaeological Museum of Symi to admire exhibits from its rich history and folklore.
Ascending the narrow lanes, you will arrive at Chorio's highest point, where a section of wall dating back to antiquity awaits. The vista is panoramic, offering opportunities for capturing stunning photographs. In the same area, you will find the Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) and the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Athena.
Discover Symi, traversing paths that seamlessly blend nature, history, and distinctive landscapes.
