A walking adventure amidst nature, sea, and history
To truly discover the island of Patmos, you must explore it on foot. Its gentle, undulating terrain, verdant slopes, and secluded coves provide perfect conditions for leisurely hikes. The island boasts an extensive network of ancient footpaths, which for centuries connected hamlets with fields, pastures, the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, and scattered chapels. Today, these paths are well-signposted, offering an exceptional walking experience through landscapes filled with intoxicating scents and views of the Aegean Sea.
One of the most picturesque routes is the Skala–Chora–Skala trail (ascent: 40 minutes; descent: 30 minutes). Following ancient cobbled paths, ascend from the port towards the Hora, passing through pine, cypress, strawberry trees, and wild pear trees. Along the way, you will find the Holy Cave of the Revelation, a place of special spiritual significance, as well as the historic Patmian Theological School, which has been in operation since the 18th century.
Equally interesting is the circular route towards the archaeological site of Kastelli, where the fortification walls once provided protection and control of the Aegean's sea lanes. From this height, an impressive view is revealed over the bays of Skala, Merikas and Chochlakas, while on clear days the view reaches as far as Ikaria and Naxos.
For a more extensive exploration, the circular route of Vagia (a 5-hour hike) winds through low-lying, fragrant Mediterranean vegetation, with scents of thyme, oregano, lavender, sage, and juniper, leading to small chapels, secluded coves, and beaches with crystal-clear waters.
