Wandering through the heart of the Cycladic landscape
Beyond the whitewashed villages and sandy beaches of Sifnos lies a network of more than 100km of signposted trails, the renowned Sifnos Trails. The routes vary in difficulty and duration, from short 30-minute strolls to multi-hour hikes traversing the island from end to end.
Among the most iconic routes lies the path from Artemonas to Panagia Chrysopigi.
Also noteworthy is the route connecting Artemonas with Profitis Ilias Apsilos —the island's tallest peak (682m)— offering panoramic views across the Aegean Sea.
Gentler, more atmospheric routes wind through the villages, from Apollonia to Artemonas, Faros, or Kastro. There, Sifnos reveals its soul: flagstone courtyards, stone benches lined with rosemary, the scent of jasmine, and the sound of the church bell accompanying your steps.
The signposting is superb, with numbered trails, signs, and QR codes leading to information regarding the destination, duration, and points of interest. Among these are the ancient sanctuary of Zeus on Profitis Ilias, the Monastery of Vouno (the Mountain), the ruins of the Citadel of Agios Andreas, and dozens of chapels scattered across the hills.
Sifnos’ nineteen trails weave a tapestry connecting land, memory, and its people. Along the way, you will encounter shepherds and sheepfolds (avoid loud noises or sudden movements); and, if you’re in luck, the aroma of freshly baked tyropita (cheese pie) wafting from the houses of Artemonas.
The sunset viewed from the path leading to Kastro is a near-mystical experience, as the light touches the stone houses and bathes them in gold.
