Maritime and Historical Museum of Galaxidi

An "ark" of seamanship

Discover the remarkable maritime history of Galaxidi in a museum that combines knowledge and beauty. Five millennia of maritime tradition unfold through paintings and exhibits that leave no visitor unmoved. From 3rd century BC coins to shipbuilding tools, wood-carved figureheads, shipping documents and ship registries, in this museum you will learn everything about seamanship in general but also about Galaxidi itself and its great history.
The museum was founded in 1928, inspired by physician and community leader Efthymios K. Vlamis, who initially established a Naval Art Gallery. Since then, a number of donations enriched the collection, the archaeological section was added, and in the early 2000s the exhibits underwent renovation, conservation, and reinstallation.
In a beautiful building of 1868, the displays begin to tell the story in antiquity, reach the Struggle for the independence of Greece and continue to the seagoing ships that flourished until the beginning of the 20th century. The influence of maritime life on local architecture and the life of the inhabitants, the legends and shipwrecks, the life of the sailors, the building of the ships, the trade routes and the products, is all presented through documents, exhibits and informative material. It is truly an ark that safeguards the memories of the people and the huge history.
The Museum is also home to the largest collection of ship paintings in Greece, many of which depict the famed 19th-century Galaxidi sailing ships. Created by Greek and foreign, usually folk artists, these works convey not only beauty but also useful information, thanks to the detailed depictions and phrases written on them. A place of honor is reserved for the "Chronicle of Galaxidi", an important manuscript which was published in 1865.
