Theopetra Cave

Prehistoric footprints from the dawn of human existence

Just a few kilometres from the awe-inspiring Meteora, an invaluable treasure of world cultural heritage awaits: the unique Theopetra Cave. This site is renowned not for stalactites or stalagmites, but as a profound testament to the history of human civilisation, recorded through the traces left by the region’s very first inhabitants.
Theopetra is one of Europe’s most significant prehistoric archaeological monuments. It is exceptional for having been continuously inhabited for more than 130,000 years, from the Middle Palaeolithic period through to the early historical years.
It is here that one of the rarest human finds in Greece and Europe was discovered: a human footprint—most likely belonging to a child—dating back 135,000 years. Excavations have also unearthed tools, bones, jewellery, and pottery, providing vital evidence of the lifestyle and survival of Middle Palaeolithic humans.
A short distance from the site, you will find the Theopetra Cave Documentation and Education Centre – Museum, dedicated to uncovering and showcasing the cave’s long history. A visit is highly recommended to view the artefacts brought to light by the archaeological digs. The museum aims to highlight the site’s cultural weight, offering an educational and experiential journey into the world of archaeology and prehistory.
Its proximity to Meteora, combined with the natural beauty of the Thessalian landscape, makes Theopetra an ideal destination for those seeking both culture and nature. Discover Theopetra Cave to travel back through the depths of time and experience a place that belongs not only to Greece, but to all of humanity.
