A geological marvel
Near the picturesque town of Alistrati, Serres, lies the Alistrati Cave, which is considered one of the most important and impressive caves in Europe. The location is deeply rooted in ancient tradition, as it is believed that the mythical gateway to the underworld, from which Pluto abducted Persephone, was located here.
The cave is formed in limestone of the Rhodope mountain range, has a total length of approximately 3 km, and its creation dates back two to three million years. The tourist route covers 1 km and will offer you a complete exploration experience.
Upon entering, you will encounter the vast antechamber from where the wandering begins in a space with a constant temperature of 17°C and 95% humidity. The speleothem decoration is breathtaking, as it includes stalactites that reach up to 15 m.
An even more unique feature of the cave is the eccentrites or helictites, rare formations that, defying gravity, grow in irregular directions and create a rare spectacle.
In a side passage, the impressive red hues of the formations that speleologists have named "Flames" emerge, with their height reaching 35 m.
The cave possesses an exceptionally rich biospeleological ecosystem, which hosts four endemic troglodytic species (such as the isopod Alistratia Beroni) and serves as a breeding shelter for at least seven species of bats.
The experience of the visit is enhanced by modern technology, with Virtual Reality (VR) applications for depicting inaccessible areas and educational robotics. In fact, you will be welcomed by the robot guide "Persephone", linking the past with the future.
You can also discover the wider region with activities such as rafting and hiking. In the adjacent Aggitis Canyon, explore prehistoric rock carvings depicting human scenes.
Immerse yourselves in your journey into the depths of the earth, feeling the awe of geological history in this rare natural monument.
