A celebrated natural landmark
One of the island's "hidden" gems is tucked away on its south-eastern tip, beckoning discovery — in fact, many visit Kastellorizo specifically for this reason. This is the Blue Cave, famous for its electric blue waters —a phenomenon created by sunlight reflecting within the cavern— and the white stalactites adorning its ceiling.
Explore it by boat or a small inflatable craft in the early morning, when the sun is low and its rays stream through the narrow entrance, barely a metre above sea level. Access is only possible in calm weather and with an experienced local boatman.
A tour of the cave (35m high, 40m wide, 75m long) is a unique experience and a must for photographers. If you are lucky, you may spot wild pigeons on the rocks or Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus), which often find refuge here. This is why locals also call it "Fokiani" (meaning Seal Cave).
Plunge into the crystalline waters, donning mask and snorkel, and the spectacle unfolding before you will remain etched in memory: azure waters teeming with shoals of diminutive fish, swimming unconcerned alongside. A truly unforgettable moment of singular beauty, inspiring exploration of the island’s remaining sea caves: Kolones, with its blue hues reminiscent of the Blue Cave, as well as the Arnaoutis and Katrantzis caves.
