Cocoon Houses and the Tzivre Silk Mill

In Soufli, architecture in the service of silk

The architecture of Soufli offers a rare example of domestic space being entirely shaped by the needs of silk production. This gave rise to the distinctive Cocoon Houses, or “bitsiklikia”—imposing mansions of the 19th and early 20th centuries designed as multifunctional spaces, where family life coexisted with the breeding of silkworms. Their interiors are characterised by large, open-plan halls without partition walls, known as “krevatia”, while the numerous windows ensured the ventilation necessary for the survival of the silkworms.
Today, many of these historic buildings have been carefully restored, preserving their original character, and now operate as atmospheric guesthouses or modern sericulture units.
A landmark reflecting the golden age of the Evros region is the Tzivre Industrial Complex, an iconic silk mill distinguished by its imposing stone architecture. Passing through its gates, visitors are transported back to the early 20th century, when the Seriano brothers and later the Tzivre family transformed its premises into a thriving “hive” of production that supplied silk across Europe.
Exploring the restored interiors and former warehouses is a sensory experience: solid stone and timber meet contemporary art, as the old factory is brought back to life as a multi-purpose cultural venue.
Soufli preserves the entire silk production chain, from the cultivation of mulberry trees to the weaving of the final product. Stroll through the town’s narrow streets and discover a living tradition reflected in the many workshops and shops offering handmade silk goods.
The historical dimension of your visit is enhanced by the area’s natural beauty, as the town stands at the crossroads between the art of silk-making and the ecological significance of the Dadia Forest.
