A modern lighthouse of culture and greenery in Athens
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC) is one of the most emblematic projects of contemporary architecture and urban regeneration in Greece. It was created thanks to the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and designed by the architectural office of Renzo Piano.
Wherever you go, you will find that the SNFCC is a meeting point for thousands of visitors. It houses two leading institutions of the country, the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, while around and above them lies the Stavros Niarchos Park.
The architecture of the complex is based on a philosophy of transparency and participation. The Canal connects the park with the sea, while the Agora, the public space between the Library and the National Opera, revives the concept of the ancient agora in a modern way.
The National Library of Greece has over 1 million books, magazines and rare handwritten codes. The reading rooms are bathed in natural light and there are spaces for seminars, screenings and exhibitions.
The Greek National Opera has evolved into a cultural beacon of international renown, with stages of high acoustics, experimental spaces, educational programs and performances that unite classical opera with contemporary creation.
Stavros Niarchos Park was designed based on the principles of Mediterranean ecology and is home to more than 1,400 trees, 164,000 plants, 128,000 shrubs, all adapted to Attic light and microclimate.
Climb up to the Lighthouse for a panoramic view of the Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf. See the choreographed fountains in the Canal and enjoy a walk across the park, with coffee from Agora N the Canal Café or the scattered snack vans. Above the Greek National Opera, there is the award-winning fine dining restaurant Delta. If you find yourself in the summer, don't miss the events that turn the space into an open celebration of light and art. New Year's Eve here has a magical atmosphere, with festive actions and a spectacle of fireworks.
