Contemporary artistic quests
In Hydra, history coexists with contemporary creativity, offering a wealth of visual arts experiences throughout the year, with the summer months as their high point. In addition to the island’s museums, its dynamic cultural map also includes:
“Red House”. The former residence of Andreas Miaoulis, at the small harbour of Kaminia, dates from 1786 and hosts temporary exhibitions during the summer.
Tompazis Mansion. A four-storey building in the Italian style, dominating the western side of the town. Since 1936 it has served as a branch of the Athens School of Fine Arts, where artists are hosted and events organised by the School are held from time to time.
“Melina Mercouri” Cultural Hall. It hosts works by distinguished artists, while in summer it stages exhibitions, concerts, talks and cultural events. You will find it to the west of the statue of Andreas Miaoulis, at the beginning of the harbour front.
DESTE Foundation. It is located in Hydra’s former slaughterhouse building, which since 2009 has been converted into a project space hosting exhibitions of contemporary art. The work Apollo Wind Spinner, created by Jeff Koons in 2022, has remained permanently on top of the building ever since, welcoming visitors as they arrive on the island.
Hydra School Projects. In the premises of the old secondary school, Dimitris Antonitsis organises a summer exhibition each year exploring pioneering expressions of contemporary art.
