An exceptional monument of industrial architecture and culture
Matsopoulos Mill was the first industrial flour mill built in Greece in 1884 and was the largest in the Balkans. It remained in operation until the mid-20th century and its mechanical equipment survives virtually intact. It is worth visiting, especially if you love the history of technology and production.
The Mill building currently houses the Industrial Museum and is part of a larger building complex called the Matsopoulos Park or Complex. The Museum’s exhibition areas display authentic production lines in full operation, showcasing the technological development of flour mills. Through multimedia, historical objects and personal heirlooms of Ioannis Matsopoulos, visitors will also become acquainted with the agricultural and industrial history of Trikala.
Matsopoulos Park has been transformed into a green space suitable for recreational and outdoor activities. The old mill’s buildings have been renovated to serve as a multi-purpose facility dedicated to art and culture. They include a screening room, an open-air cinema, as well as theatre, painting and sculpture workshops. There is also a cafeteria that offers moments of relaxation in a unique environment.
Apart from the Industrial Museum, the remaining sections are fully operational only during the Christmas holiday season, when they host Greece’s largest Christmas theme park, offering exciting experiences against a fairytale backdrop.
Matsopoulos Mill is located very close to the centre of Trikala and is easily accessible via car or public transport. Discover how the mill used to work, feel the atmosphere of technological innovation that left its mark on the local community and allow the magic of industrial heritage to carry you away.
