Patras Castle

The Byzantine fortress overlooking Patras

At the foothills of Mount Panachaiko, right above the city's historic centre, Patras Castle has stood dominant for fifteen centuries. Built on the site of the ancient acropolis, it weaves together a single narrative of Antiquity, Byzantium, the Frankish and Venetian rules, and the Ottoman period.
The castle’s foundation dates back to the second half of the 6th century AD, a period marked by the strengthening of the Peloponnese's defences. Construction materials were largely sourced from the ruined ancient acropolis, which had been devastated by the powerful earthquake of 551/552 AD. The choice of location ensured total control over both the land and the city's sea front.
The fortification consists of a broad outer enclosure with towers and bastions, surrounded by a moat on three sides. In the north-eastern section lies the Exapyrgio, an inner enclosure with six towers built upon a natural mound.
While the northern walls belong to the monument's earliest phase, the continuous use of the castle until modern times has left visible traces of all its conquerors. Since 1975, it has operated as an archaeological site open to the public, offering panoramic views of the city and the Gulf of Patras.
Ascend to Patras Castle and let your gaze travel from the ramparts across the Gulf. Combine your visit with a stroll through the historic centre and a stop at the Roman Odeon to discover the city through its most significant monuments.
