Church of Panagia Parigoritissa

Architecture, faith and art in harmony

At the heart of historic Arta stands one of the most important monuments of late Byzantine architecture in Greece: the Church of Panagia Parigoritissa. A place of spirituality and aesthetic refinement, it is a leading destination for cultural tourism in Epirus and will captivate you at first sight.
The church was built in the late 13th century (c. 1285-1290) by the Despot of Epirus Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas and his wife Anna Palaiologina, as the katholikon of a monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The name "Parigoritissa" refers to the consoling role of the Theotokos, giving the monument a strong symbolism of faith and hope.
Architecturally, Parigoritissa stands out for its monumental scale and the bold composition of its octagonal dome, supported by a complex system of arches and columns. Its exterior impresses with its rich brickwork decoration, its marble sculptures and its incorporated ancient and early Christian architectural elements, which create an exceptional mosaic of historical periods.
Inside, the surviving wall paintings and architectural features exude grandeur and spirituality, characteristics representative of Byzantine art. The church continues to function to this day as a place of worship, maintaining a living link between the past and the present.
You can combine your visit to Panagia Parigoritissa with a tour of Arta's historic centre, its Byzantine monuments and its famous bridge. Discover a church that conveys the sense of different eras in a way that will stay with you.
